Back to the Drawing Board: Course Design in Active Learning Spaces
Traditional classrooms elicit certain expectations about learning: students sit in fixed seats taking notes while instructors lecture. In contrast, modern learning theories implore instructors to actively engage students with course content. For instructors to build better courses, we need classrooms built for better learning. Innovative classrooms have flexible configurations and are outfitted with arrays of high- and low-tech tools. Yet, effective teaching in these spaces sends instructors "back to the drawing board" for course design. Presenters will share lessons learned from teaching in active learning classrooms and results from a study comparing student experiences in traditional and active learning spaces.
