The Learner in Charge: Leading a Novel Pedagogical Approach for Online Discussions
This session will provide a real-life example of a novel pedagogical approach for online courses that encourages students to be co-designers of their learning. In a fully online graduate course in Learning Technologies, students were in charge of moderating online discussions for a week using a variety of facilitation strategies. Even though the topics/readings were proposed by the instructor, the strategies designed to initiate and sustain the online discussions were creatively developed by the students. This approach increased engagement among students and also gave them opportunities to practice much of what they were learning in their program. The instructor followed the lead of the student facilitator and contributed with her experiences and knowledge as any other student in the class.
