Consumers to Creators: Assignments that Build Video Literacy
According to a Cisco study, 80 percent of internet traffic will be video by 2021. New pedagogical techniques like the flipped classroom make our students constant consumers of video. But in order to have a voice in these new classroom environments, and in the wider world, students must know how to communicate effectively in video themselves. This session will model a sequence of assignments created for a section of Engineering 2367 that are designed to teach video literacy through the lens of mobile filmmaking. We will begin with an assignment from the course that will invite the audience to do some filming. Then we’ll discuss the milestones along the road to video literacy, how to reflect these in engaging assignments, and the latest free mobile apps for every step (Storyboarder, Adobe Spark, iMovie). We will close with samples of students' final projects, their own takes on the popular "Mythbusters" TV show.
