Re-imagining the Library with Makerspace and Design Thinking

Libraries are the place students go to explore and discover... and now they are designing in the same space! Explore the Makerspace’s influence as we re-imagine K-12 school libraries and different ways schools are adopting the design thinking model. In this presentation, Columbus City Schools along with WOSU Classroom will describe their experiences in implementing Makerspaces with Design Thinking in their K-5 Libraries. This presentation will inform the audience about Makerspace Equipment, learning space design and developing a design thinking mindset in students.

Bill Mooney has been in the teaching field for over 20 years as a classroom teacher, online instructor, and technology consultant. Bill started his teaching career as a high school history teacher. Bill’s interest in education technology allowed for opportunities and new careers in the teaching field. In his free time Bill enjoys books, art, and spending time with his wife and kids.

Leslie Kelly has been in the field of education for twenty plus years. She received her Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University and has served as an education leader in both urban and suburban settings. Columbus City Schools has been her home for the past four years where she has serves as the Director of Elementary Curriculum.

Ellen is a lifelong learner with a passion to create authentic learning environments ensuring the next generation has the opportunity to live a life of dignity. Within the K-12 domain, Ellen has served as the Curriculum Coordinator of Humanities for South-Western City Schools before venturing out into the world of consulting. As a consultant, Ellen has worked with public, private and charter schools through non-profit agencies including ESC of Central Ohio, Battelle for Kids, Fairfield County ESC, META Solutions before landing at WOSU Public Media. In each setting, Ellen has collaborated with educational leaders and teachers to drive data-making decisions towards cultivating innovative learning environments. In the post-secondary world, Ellen is an adjunct for Concordia University Chicago teaching online for Ohio and Illinois teacher leader cohorts in masters and doctoral pathways. As part of the CUC’s master’s program for Educational Leadership, Ellen supervises principal interns in Central Ohio schools. In her spare time, Ellen is a Yogi, baker, and knitter.

Amy Palermo, Chief Content Director Education Technology, WOSU Public Media, began her

educational career in Texas as a Middle School Language Arts teacher, yearbook advisor, and Elementary School Curriculum Integration Specialist. Amy serves as the Vice President for ITIP Ohio, a nonprofit organization that serves as the voice of K-12 school system technology leaders in Ohio. Her passion for educational technology began we she saw first hand the impact technology has on students with special needs, and her experiences have fueled her commitment to helping other educators implement teaching practices that change the landscape of the classroom and empower each child to become a successful learner. Amy’s hobbies include the occasional Pinterest inspired craft projects and searching for the perfect kitchen gadget that will turn her into the ultimate chef.
