Virtual Weeds: The Trials of Scanning Living Plants
In a collaboration between the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science and the Department of Art, Bruce Ackley and Andrew Frueh have been researching the feasibility of and a possible workflow for creating high-resolution 3D scans of living plants. Bruce produces videos of plant growth and other learning materials, including their current textbook. Andrew works with digital media and fabrication and runs a photogrammetric 3D scanning lab for artists and designers. They will cover the difficulties and discoveries they have encountered in their work, discuss doing great things on a small budget, and recommend strategies for implementing a workflow for capturing 3D scans and publishing material for students.
Andrew Frueh is an artist and educator and the sound artist and app developer for ARTrees. He teaches classes and workshops in digital media, game design, and robotics, and runs the digital fabrication lab in the Department of Art. His current research is in low- cost, high-resolution 3D scanning for better 3D model acquisition.
While pursing his Masters’ of Science Degree in Weed Science, Bruce accepted his current position of Extension Program Specialist at The Ohio State University. His position provides many diverse opportunities, including field research, technology development, teaching, and coaching the university's weed science team.
