We Need to Get Out of Our Own Way

Educations and education experts all seem to agree that we can and should change the way we educate, but why is this not happening more consistently? Why is it not happening consistently in higher education, event? My presentation will consist of an overview of innovative pedagogy with examples from my own teaching. Additionally, I will provide examples of how we are NOT achieving this. Why is this occurring and what can we do about it? We may not make all the rules, but we still have control over what we do in our classrooms. It’s time to quit blaming the “they” who won’t allow us to do what we know is right for learning and for our future students. Change begins with us.

Dr. Steve Kucinski is a Nationally Board Certified teacher who has taught middle and high school English for 25 years. This is his 18th year teaching at Dublin Coffman and 8th year as an adjunct lecturer at The Ohio State University. Steve has served as department chair and district lead teacher in past years. He has a Master’s in Educational Administration and a Ph.D. in Adolescent Development from The Ohio State University. He has a young adult novel published, Between Friends, and he delivered a TED Talk in Worthington in 2016 entitled, "Resolve to enjoy the goodness and beauty in each other and in life.”

Currently, he is passionate about innovation and creativity in teaching and learning as well as integrating technology into the classroom. He has immersed himself in teaching and learning in his life: his wife, Gretchen, has taught music for 25 years, and he has three amazing sons -- Austin, a senior at UC studying Electrical Engineering; Grant, a senior at Thomas Worthington soon to study Sports Management in college; and Chase, a 6th grader, getting ready to take over the world.
