Virtual Reality Exploration of Earth's Cryosphere

Cartoon Room

Teams from the Byrd Center are conducting research throughout the world. Through their travels, team members have opportunities to capture research and landscapes on camera. Using readily-available, low-cost, and rugged tools, the center’s Education and Outreach staff has been able to train members to collect footage without disrupting their scientific work and has been experimenting with virtual reality to allow the public to more immersively explore Earth’s cryosphere.

Visit our display area to walk on the Quelccaya Ice Cap of Peru, stand with rangers on a glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in Alaska, and fly over the Jakobshavn Glacier in Greenland!
