Test Banks Without Borders: A New Direction for Open Source
Teaching is traditionally a solitary process, but it doesn’t have to be. We will tell the story of the creation of a collaboratively-authored, peer-reviewed test bank. Intended to serve as an open source alternative to costly test banks provided by textbook publishers, the resulting questions were aligned with common learning objectives and enhanced by peer review. Together, we will consider the advantages that such a resource brings to a student body that will eventually have access to common technology via Ohio State’s Digital Flagship Initiative. Session participants will experience the benefits of reviewing questions based on learning outcomes, discuss methods for harnessing the power of the “testing effect” when such a test bank is integrated into a learning management system and across shared platforms, and draft an action plan for embarking on a similar project with colleagues at their own institution or elsewhere. We will also showcase a tool for creating a crowd-sourced, peer-reviewed test bank.
