A Community that Learns: The Online Master in Art Education at The Ohio State University

This presentation focuses on how we build a sense of community in e-learning environments and how an online MA program empowers its students, who are teachers, to enact meaningful change in their teaching practices. The Online Master of Arts in Art Education program at Ohio State is geared toward art educators who want to change their thinking and the world through art-making and education. Through online collaboration and multimodal experiences, practicing teachers are challenged to think differently about what art education is and what art educators do. The sense of community that develops--between students and faculty rethinking their practice together--connects art-making and teaching, and research with practice. Students expand art education beyond their classroom walls and even globally with the technology, tools, and strategies they take with them. With these tools, they rethink the possibilities in their practice of teaching and learning.
