Academic Podcasting: What Works
In the past few years, academic podcasts have increased their ubiquity and academic prestige. Our panel of veteran podcasters discuss why we started podcasting, how it's changed our teaching and community work, and what practices we've found that enable our productions. We'll share samples from academic podcasts and highlight what content engages our listeners, including students.
James Phelan teaches and writes about narrative theory, the medical humanities, the English and American novel, especially from modernism to the present, and nonfiction narrative. He is the first person in the history of the English department to be awarded both the Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award (2007) and the Distinguished Scholar Award (2004). He is the author or co-author of 10 books and editor or co-editor of another 10, as well as approximately 175 essays.
David Staley is an associate professor in the Department of History--where he teaches courses in digital history and historical methods--and holds courtesy appointments in the departments of Design--where he has taught courses in Design History and Design Futures--and Educational Studies, where he has led the "Forum on the University." He is the author of Historical Imagination and Alternative Universities, among others
Dr. Elena Foulis is a student-centered educator with over 15 years of experience in higher education. She is an Ohio State alumnus and holds B.A and M.A degrees in Spanish and Latin American Literature and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies. Her research and teaching interests include U.S. Latina/o literature, Spanish for Heritage Learners and Oral History. She has presented her work at national and international conferences.
Zoe Brigley Thompson is the author of three books of poetry published by Bloodaxe: Hand & Skull; Conquest; and The Secret. All three are UK Poetry Book Society Recommendations. She also has a collection of nonfiction essays: Notes from a Swing State: Writing from Wales and America. Her writing appears in Poetry Ireland Review, Poetry Review, The Chicago Review, Australian Book Review, PN Review, Women’s Studies Quarterly, Copper Nickel, Poetry Wales and elsewhere.
Doug Dangler holds a BA in chemistry and biology from the University of Toledo and an MA and PhD in English from The Ohio State University. His interests are digital media, broadcasting, and instructional design and technology.
Paul Kotheimer, a multimedia specialist with 22 years of experience working for the Arts and Science Technology Services Studio, enjoys audio recording, production, photography, and video post production. He began recording and supporting podcasts in 2004 and continues to be an enthusiastic proponent of the medium today.
