DEIJ and Course Material: Connecting Students to their Lived Experience
In this panel and workshop, we discuss how Ohio State Online (OSO) aims to increase diversity in courses. We explore the challenges and strategies in recent initiatives for diversifying course materials, highlighting how these initiatives require community building, student feedback, and critical reflection.
Ryan Sheehan (he/they) is an associate instructional designer with the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation (ODTI). Ryan has extensive experience as an in-person and online college instructor. They received a PhD in English from OSU in 2021, focusing on digital media and game-based pedagogy, queer and disability studies, and rhetorical studies. He now works closely with faculty and OSU developing and revising online courses.
Dr. Clark comes to CSU from The Ohio State University, where among many accolades, she won an Anthropology Graduate Teaching Fellowship, OSU Alumni Grant, and a Ray Travel Award. She has bio-archeological fieldwork experience in Ireland, Croatia and Ohio and published a book with four colleagues entitled Introduction to Biological Anthropology (Top Hat, Toronto, Canada). Her most recent published research findings on “The effectiveness of skeletal age-estimation in the reconstruction of population survivorship in post-medieval Dublin” were published in the International Journal of Osteoarcheology. As instructor of record at OSU, Dr. Clark’s classes included “Crisis! An Anthropological Perspective of Global Issues” and (as study abroad resident director) “History and Archeology of Medieval Ireland.” She also served as adjunct at Columbus State Community College.
Scott Nelson leads the Instructional Media Team for Ohio State Online in the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation. His team works with instructional designers and instructors to create engaging interactive instructional media content to enhance learning and push the boundaries of innovative teaching and learning technologies.
Anna Meurer, MPH, CPH is the Program Manager for Education for the Center for Bioethics at The Ohio State University. In her role, she helps manage the administrative aspects the Center’s educational offerings and teaches the graduate Bioethics Symposium courses. She holds a BA in History and Religion from Georgetown College and an MPH with an emphasis in Community Health Education from Eastern Kentucky University. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Healthcare Ethics at Duquesne University. Her research focuses on the exercise of professional discretion within health care, and she has additional interests in bioethics education, public health ethics, and veterinary ethics. Outside of work, she enjoys running and spending time with her dog, Rollo, and her horse, Katie.
Courtney Thiele, JD, MA is an assistant professor in the Division of Bioethics, Director of the Bioethics Graduate Programs and Vice-chair for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the Department of Biomedical Education and Anatomy at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Courtney has a background in both law and bioethics. She graduated with a law degree from St. Louis University, where she concentrated in health law and served as an editor on the Journal of Health Law and Policy . Courtney completed a fellowship in clinical bioethics at The Ohio State Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities, in addition to completing her MA in bioethics from Trinity International University. She enjoys researching, writing, and teaching on the intersection of bioethics and law and considering creative ways to integrate bioethics into teaching and learning. Courtney lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband, daughter, and very friendly dog, Sawyer. Courtney loves traveling with her family, visiting independent bookstores, and hiking beautiful trails.
