Globally Interconnected Classrooms: The Art of COIL Virtual Exchange
The art of COIL virtual exchange is about achieving global awareness and intercultural learning goals through purposefully designed and carefully facilitated collaborations with international peers. Instructors with experiences in developing and teaching COIL courses will demystify the process and share their insights on student learning.
Dr. Jiang supports global learning curriculum design and assessment and works with instructors to integrate COIL Virtual Exchange experiences and intercultural learning into courses at all levels. Her research focuses on global learning and assessment, development of intercultural competence and high impact educational practices. Dr. Jiang facilitates the COIL learning community and consults on intercultural development for faculty and students.
Danielle V. Schoon (PhD in Cultural Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies) is a senior lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. Dr. Schoon's research is on the politics of Roma identity in contemporary Turkey. She frequently takes advantage of professional development opportunities to improve her teaching and is an advocate of active learning and community engagement. She is the recipient of two Research and Implementation grants from the Drake Institute.
April D. Weintritt (PhD in Italian Studies) is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of French and Italian and Assistant Director of the Italian Language Program. She specializes in World Language Pedagogy and content-based teaching in upper-level Italian Studies courses. She has co-produced, with Janice Aski and colleagues from Purdue University, a webinar series dedicated to intercultural language learning: https://frit.osu.edu/initiatives/intercultural-competence. She is currently part of a research team with Janice Aski and Cindy Jiang studying the implementation of intercultural competence training in elementary Italian language courses. In a related endeavor, April and her ITAL 2102 students completed their first COIL virtual exchange with partners in Italy in Autumn 2021.
